RICE: Bringing Early Education & Care to Remote South Australia

Remote & Isolated Children’s Exercise (RICE) is a unique not-for-profit mobile service based in Port Augusta, dedicated to supporting children and families across 650,000 square kilometres of outback South Australia.

Our Mission:
To ensure geographically isolated families have access to quality early years services—including education, childcare, and wellbeing support—that are otherwise unavailable due to remote location.

Our Programs:

  • Preschool Program: Early childhood education for eligible children

  • Outback Childcare: Live-in childcare for families without access to mainstream services

  • Wellbeing Program: Guided support and referrals for families in need

  • Activity Days & Playdays: Community-based play and social learning events

  • Remote Crèche: Term-time care in Orroroo and Hawker

  • Resource Centre: Educational toys, games, and books for loan

How We Work:
Our team travels by 4WD to deliver services directly to remote towns, stations, and communities—uniting families through play, learning, and shared support.

Join Us:
Become a RICE member to access our programs and resources, or support our mission to ensure no child in outback SA is left without opportunities to learn, play, and thrive.

RICE: Connecting communities, nurturing growth, and bridging the distance since 1976.
